Here is an invite to a group show 'From over there to over here', curated by Talia Smith at Lopdell House Gallery in Auckland, New Zealand, that I'm excited to be taking part in. If you are in the area, I hope you can pop in and have a look.

la cour des miracles / exhibition
I have the pleasure to be taking part in the upcoming exhibition 'La Cour Des Miracles', curated by Juan Riusech, and presented together with Helene Soete, that will be held from 14 Dec 13 - 18 Jan 14, at Alliages in Lille, France. If you are in that part of the world, I hope you can stop by.
The exhibition is inspired by La Cour Des Miracles (“court of miracles"). You can find more info here.
I'll be posting an image of my piece soon.

henriette schuster
One of my favourite jewellery makers and artists, Henriette Schuster has a solo exhibition titled 'Almost Invisible' at Gallery Funaki. I can't wait to see it.

"Sometimes the most
affecting gestures are very small and very quiet. Schuster creates jewellery
and drawings that shy away from bold declarations and instead, wait quietly for
close attention. Working with silver and thread, Henriette’s jewellery is
arrestingly simple and direct: small elements, often in pairs, sit in delicate
balance with one another, a subtle dance of interdependence and connection." from here.

sydney ~ travel diary
Finally, I had a chance to update these pages and show snippets from my trip to Sydney and Gaffa Gallery. It was a great little trip and it was so nice to meet the lovely people at Gaffa, they were so kind and welcoming! Also, I'll be updating my website soon with the 'meanders' series, so here are a few snippets:

While in Sydney, we couldn't miss the opportunity to visit the MCA and view an exhibition by Wangechi Mutu. Discovering Mutu's work was a true gift. I was really taken by her work. She fuses and interplays vulnerability and strength so well - as if she lures you in with a whisper only to confront you with such power... Her work deals with and questions the ideas of "beauty, colonialism, race and gender"*.
Photographs are absolutely not enough to describe the subtleties of her work (especially these ones taken with a phone camera! Sorry for bad photos, but I couldn't resist posting). Also, I'm not sure if I was just projecting but at brief instants I thought I recognised a nod to the great Louise Bourgeois as well as Joseph Beuys, yet in clearly Mutu's voice. Great work, so worth experiencing.

We also visited a very good exhibition of photographs by Jeff Wall. Really worth visiting. A stop over at Kinokuniya was a must. I could spend hours in there. Oh wait... Yes, hours later I came out with a loot of japanese mooks.

Also, I was so happy to catch up with the lovely friend from jewellery school days and a jeweller resident at Gaffa Gallery, Lalita Peeranan. After living and working in Florence, New York and Amsterdam, she is back in Australia. We had a peek at her studio and her beautiful work. You can see more of her work here.

'meanders' at gaffa gallery
My new series Meanders will show at Gaffa Gallery on 11 July, as part of Gaffa's Curio Collectors Cabinet, which is a great platform that showcase local jewellery makers. It's great to take part!
You can view more here on previous exhibitions, as well as a sneak peek of Meanders and my tiny studio.

New Places – Abstractions
Of A City
“In the beginning, a
variety of many-coloured images of a city: meeting points,
streets, people, blue skies, night and day. Capturing the pulse,
the movement, or the silence.
Sketching, cutting
paper, creating a map of sorts in my studio, micro and macro at
once as my perspective. Picking out colours,
choosing materials, thinking about my purpose, reflecting on meanings
and limitations. Giving each element
its shape, assigning it a size and its place, connecting it further to
circumscribe in to space, having it all transform into a necklace.
No up, no down,
playing around the neck, constantly finding new directions”
from here.
And here is a view of Karin's beautiful studio.
